Were the rivers open and fish plentiful

Lately I have been rather nostalgic for this past year’s backcountry fishing trips. Trout occupy my dreams. I would rather be catching dancing trout than drinking Dancing Trout. The forecast is 50 degrees for this Saturday, and I plan to head down the Bitterroot River to try my luck there. But my heart is yearning for the North Fork of the Blackfoot, Upper Rattlesnake Creek, and South Fork of the Flathead. So until then, two pictures from a backpacking/fishing trip last summer, in the middle of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, two days from the nearest trailhead, but oh so perfectly in the heart of wild cutthroat country.

This wasn't the biggest cutthroat that I caught that day, but it was a fun one. You can see the absolutely amazing hole in the top-left corner of the picture.

“I was fishing just up by the bend. Absolutely wonderful. Crystal clear water, ten miles of the river to myself, and no grizzly bears in sight.

Eagle Creek

This past weekend I was in Oregon visiting Sarah and other friends from Dartmouth. Truly it was a lovely time. On Saturday, Sarah and I went for an initially lovely but eventually cold and wet hike up Eagle Creek, in the Columbia River Gorge. It was the first time that I had been in a new ecosystem in quite a while – t’was wonderful. I have a few pictures attached – I hope you like black and white.

Spring Break in New Mexico

A little over a month ago now I was on a spring break adventure in southern New Mexico. Needless to say there were many adventures, including some of the most horribly maintained trails I’ve ever hiked on, many trout for dinner, snow, sun, swimming, getting lost, finding cool rocks, fording streams, climbing to the top of cliffs, etc etc. I’m too lazy now to write up a full account, but hopefully some pictures will suffice.

Katahdin

Every year the DOC Winter Sports Club goes on a big trip up to Katahdin – the end of the Appalachian Trail and a big mountain in Maine. The trip was pretty grand. We skied in ten miles the first day, then four miles of snowshoeing the second. The third day we summitted, but that night had to build-up our shelter in order so that we wouldn’t freeze in the sub-20-below temperatures. Out we skied the fifth day, and then back to Hanover we went. A good trip overall, although I didn’t take nearly enough pictures. But I did take panorama above, which turned out pretty well. A friend of mine did take plenty of pictures though – check out his site.

Two Evenings on Belt Creek

I’ve blogged on Belt Creek before, suffice to say it is a great little stream right by my cabin. And most fortunate this year, it is cold and remains cold. Most of the major rivers in the state have fishing restrictions because of warm water temperatures (70 – 75 degrees), which are not healthy for trout in the least bit. But Belt Creek remained a brisk 60 degrees in the heat of the afternoon last week. Thus the fishing was great.

The first day I caught a mix of rainbows and cutthroat. Because I have far more attachment of cutthroat than rainbows, of course the only pictures I take are of the cutthroat variety. The guy above was the second fish I caught of the day – a good looking and healthy cut.

The second day I was fishing upstream about 7 miles from where I fished before. And all I caught were rainbows (not that I’m complaining). This was the biggest guy I caught. I have to learn how to move my hands to a proper position so that the camera can actually see the fish, but this guy put on quite a fight and took a while to get in. He jumped about a foot out of the water when he initially ate my fly. Somewhere between 12″ and 14″ the fish was.

Skiing the Carriage Road

Saturday was a beautiful day – a perfect day to be backcountry skiing on Moosilauke. We spent the night at John Rand, woke up late in the morning, skinned up Snapper, and then skied down the Carriage Road. Wonderful snow and great weather. And actually got a few tele turns in, which was nice.
